After considerable time apart pursuing their own musical projects, 2009 marked the return of songwriters Amy MacClain and Jason Cole as Utah Girl- playing their first show in over six years in January. New songs continue to be written and recording for a new album has begun.
Oakland, California, circa 1999- Formed accidentally by two roommates over coffee and a guitar leaning against their living room wall, Utah Girl soon became a fixture on the open mic and coffee house scene in the East Bay, San Francisco and beyond. Besides being roommates, singer Amy MacClain and drummer Jason Cole were both in the same band, Sugar Boogie. That morning Jason, the novice guitarist, sat on the couch strumming a simple but powerful chord progression on Amy's acoustic. Amy soon arrived from the kitchen with coffee excitedly instructing Jason to, "keep playing that" as she began to sing- the words and melodies flowed free, the song writing was close to effortless. By the end of the day they had written three complete, original songs; and over the next few years they would write over 25 more.
The fledgling songwriting duo were soon unceremoniously christened "Utah Girl" after a song of the same name that Amy wrote after seeing a female artist (from Utah!) perform at the popular Monday open mic at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco. Utah Girl would soon expand to a five-piece band with bass, drums and female backing vocals; they performed to appreciative crowds in numerous the clubs and cafes up until calling it a day in 2003. Flash forward to 2010 and Utah Girl are back and playing better than ever, and enjoying it better as well.
